WIP Colorway Review and Pattern Reveal

I have not participated in W.i.P. wednesday since Halloween, shortly after the birth of my granddaughter, and I miss it. There was quite a lull where I made mini-projects like burpcloths and pillowcases and posted about them. I did not deem them worthy of a WIP since they were made, and mailed pretty much between Wednesdays.  Being home a bit after some surgery enabled me indulge myself in starting another quilt, even though there are several UFOs in my closet. It is made of five colorways of fabric, each colorway of three hues each.  This quilt is as yet nameless and has been the subject of my last four posts.

If my handful of followers have not yet figured it out from my earlier hints, the pattern I have been using for my last four posts is Dash-in-the-Box by A Quilter's Dream. You have read how I waxed poetic about its cleverness and creativity.  Do visit this site for the patterns there that I think are quirky and have a bit of a lovely twist to them. Here is the picture on the pattern front of Dash-in-the-Box

The designer used what I call soft desert tones. My version uses bright batiks from a repurposed kit I bought on sale. Since I know you are always your own worst critic here is my color assessment for the first three colorways showcasing six assembled blocks from each.
Colorway 1:   greens, pinks, blues

I love how the pink twins complement each other. Similarly, the two shades of green lend interest, I think. There is poor twin-ness in blues, however. Since these blocks provide variety, maybe I'll place them near the quilt edges? There is also poor contrast in the dark blue and green block which I should have know since they are so close on color wheel.  This block definitely gets hidden somewhere if used at all.

Colorway 2: blues, yellows, reds

This combination has great contrast and pops, my favorite combo yet. With 20/20 hindsight this makes sense since they are primary colors triadic on color wheel.

Colorway 3:  oranges, lilacs, limes

This combination's popping performance is mediocre, surprising since they are secondary colors triadic on color wheel. But I love these colors so these blocks will definitely stay. And, yes, there is a mistake in the lower left lilac block that I need to fix.

Colorway 4: yellows, magentas,  turquoises

I went back to work today so only had time so far to make the concentric box parts and not the churn dash parts. I think these colors pop well, too. I can hardly wait to see how the large scale magenta batik works up.

Colorway 5:  reds, blues, limes

This is the fifth colorway.  I think the twin-ness of the fat eighth pairs is good and I hope there is sufficient contrast.

Afterwards the challenge will be to intermix the five colorways and orient the 30 blocks before assembly into the quilt top.

Completed projects:
  1. Christmas burp cloths, 2 each in Grinch, Toys, and Snowflake fabrics
  2. Fireman pillowcase

  1. Doll quilt - still awaiting binding and next up on finishing since it is so close
  2. Grinch quilt - still on design wall for assembly and creative sashing solution

  4. Square pumpkin/iris/red modern wallhanging to back, FMQ, and bind
New projects:
  1. Concentric blocks and churn dash variation quilt
  2. Catching up on blog posts - 5 of 'em

Stats since last WIP 10/31/12:

  3. WIP Wednesday, oh how I have missed you! Glad to see you are making good progress on your quilt, and very excited to see the "big picture" - I agree with how amazingly different something can look in another colorway; and there are so many in this quilt! Can't wait to see the final product.
